1957 -“The Beginning”

Early days singers had a unique style of singing. It was not such an easy thing to get into music.Lot of auditions and approvals were needed , in order to sing under a music director.Music directors then were very concerned about singing. Prior to 1950s the age was where actors by themselves would sing and enact the characters.Later came the Playback singing. 1950s was the decade where many talents blossomed who created history in the Tamil Cinema Play Back Singing.The same holds good for Music Directors too. Their compositions are everlasting.Deprived of technology , with only human talents the era had given musical wonders to all of us. It’s our luck that some of them are still with us, living with memories and setting an examples to future generations.

S Janaki’s very first song in Tamil was for a movie named ‘Vidhiyin Vilaiyattu’ and the song lyriced as ‘Pedhai en vaazhkai paazhaanadheno’ tuned by T Chalapathi Rao , a pathos solo number, which remained inside studios forever.The same year for another movie ‘ Magadhal Naattu Mary’ S Janaki paired for a duet with P B Sreenivas singing ‘Kannukku Nere’ is the very first released song and it clearly assures on the singing and undoubtedly on the singers talent for a promising long career in the industry.1957 was breakthrough in S Janaki’s career , her talents started to get explored not only in Tamil but in other languages too.Telugu, Malayalam, Sinhalese, Kannada found their destined singer by then , without whom the music is never complete.

Her Initial days were not very easy. She had to compete with well established singers of those days. Even then she got some golden opportunities.With such a tender voice at the age of 19, S Janaki paired with A S Mahadevan, C S Jayaraman, K R Ramasamy, T R Mahalingam, A L Raghavan, A M Raja, T M Soundararajan who were the leading male singer’s. A notable point, although not a classically trained singer S Janaki had sung numerous classical based songs since her starting days till date. ‘Maasil Veenaiyum ‘ from Paadhai Theiryidhu Paar was a pure classical number with A S Mahadevan tuned by MB Sreenivasan. ‘Kaaleyum Neeye Maaleyum Neeye’ from Then Nilavu a classic number evergreen till date. S Janaki had reserved a unique place in the cinema industry by then. Down South she had started to spread her vocal magic in Kannada, Malayalam to core. 1960s was the busy decade for S Janaki in South Indian Cinema Music as a super play back singer mainly in Kannada and Malayalam. Music Directors then S M Subbaiah Naidu,G K Venkatesh,M S Viswanathan Ramamurthy who were in lead did provide her songs which were destined only to her.
