S Janaki Annamayya Madhura Geethalu

Shri Annamacharaya is a great devotee of Lord Venkateswara, who needs no introduction in world of telugu devotaional music . This great poet of 14th century composed nearly 36,000 songs in praise of Lord.He brought Devotional music close to common people. His compositions covered all varities of songs from folk to phlisophical but all devoted to Lord.

S Janaki sang sevaral Annamayya songs mainly in music of her close relative Shri BalaKrishna prasad. We are presenting a collection of 45 songs from various popular albums like Annamayya Shri Krishna thathwam, Desi kavitha Ganam, Annamayya Padamrutha varshini, Anamayya pelli patalu etc.. S Janaki correctly brings out the wide variety in these timeless compositions in her expressive singing .May be that is the reason why these songs never fail to take us down a nostalgic memory lane when ever we listen them !

Article on Golden Jubilee Celebrations

As nightingale S. Janaki celebrates her 55th year in world of film music today, let us offer the remarkable singer our best wishes for a long life filled with good health and happiness. We are presenting an old article by MR.Sarvanan describing the Golden jubilee function in his own words. We thank him also for providing us such a valuable and interesting information!!

The imposing Lalita Kala Thoranam at Hyderabad was filled with people on 4th April 2007. The occasion was the celebration of a remarkable singer completing 50 years in the Indian film industry. Celebrities and commoners thronged the venue, eager to offer their felicitations to a person whom they all adore- S. Janaki. It was on 4th April 1957 that Janaki recorded her first ever film song, and the Andhra Pradesh State Cultural Department and Andhra Pradesh Kala Vedika joined hands to organize a magnificent jamboree to mark this momentous event. Tastefully designed hoardings and aesthetically pleasing decorations added to the artistic ambience of the hall. All the hoardings, fliers and invitations had the familiar face flashing the famous guileless smile, the same trademark smile that remained serenely in place all through the 50 years, through highs and lows, and even more astounding, during all her recordings and stage performances, whatever be the song, irrespective of the intricacy of the composition, tempo or pitch…

Generations of singers had gathered in hordes to greet their beloved colleague. If Ravvu Balasaraswathi, K. Rani, P.B. Srinivas, P. Suseela and L. R Eswari represented the old-guard who were part of the golden era when Janaki made her debut, SPB was the reminder of the heady times when Janaki soared to the very pinnacle of popularity all over the South, and S.P. Shailaja and Chithra were the proud envoys of the younger generations who had Janaki as their role model and who were fortunate to enter the industry when the senior had several years of singing still left in her.

24 singers presented 50 songs of Janaki to mark the milestone. The doyenne began the show herself, going down in memory lane singing her first song in Telugu ‘neeyasa adiyasa’. K.B. Tilak, the producer and director of the movie ‘M.L.A’ (1957/ Anupama) which had featured that song 50 years ago was seated right at front, no doubt filled with sepia toned memories of that day in the distant past when the nineteen year-old Janaki had made her debut in Telugu with this song. Filled with joy at his favorite co-singer being honoured thus and eager to do his mite, SPB came on stage and sang a few duets with Janaki. ‘ mounamElanOyi, malli malli idi raani rOju’ had the audience heave a wistful sigh for the wonderful times when the sheer magic of this singing pair ruled the airwaves. And when the chanteuse crooned ‘sirimalle poova’ (the Telugu version of ‘sendhoora poovE’), the standing ovation that she received took a long time to subside.

Union Minister T. Subbirami Reddy, State Finance Minister K. Rosiah, IAS officer K.V. Ramana, Rallabandi Kavita Prasad, Dr. C. Narayana Reddy and the Chairman of the State Legislative Council, Chakrapani were some of the celebrity fans of Janaki who stayed all through the show, enjoying every minute of the event. Subbirami Reddy presented Janaki with a cheque for Rs. One Lakh. In his heartfelt words of encomium, the minister echoed the hopes of the thousands in the hall, when he wished aloud that the Government of India would honour Janaki with a Padma Bhushan.

When called upon to speak a few words in response, a visibly moved Janaki said, “”Millions of fans have showered so much affection on me all these years. They have secured my voice in their hearts. What more can I ask for as a singer!” After a brief pause, flanked by a beaming Suseela and Eswari on either side and flashing her heartwarming smile, Janaki added, “Fifty years have gone by. But even today when I stand up to sing, I tingle with the same excitement that I felt while singing my first song!”

Where would have her thoughts wandered that emotional moment in that august assembly, I wonder… was she remembering her late father-in-law who was untiring in his efforts to get her a foothold in the film industry, or was she paying mental obeisance to the late Chalapathi Rao who gave Janaki her first song…was she lamenting the loss of her husband who had been her pillar of strength… would she have thought of the first 20 years of her career when she had to wait in the sidelines in Tamil film music despite the few songs that came her way becoming hugely popular, or the stupendous successes that she notched in Malayalam and Kannada during the same period, or was she recalling Ilaiyaraja and the unforgettable decades when she finally zoomed to the front ranks in Tamil film music as well and stayed ensconced there singing one marvel after another… Would she have remembered the awards and accolades that have been bestowed upon her, or was she lost in nostalgia thinking of the challenging compositions that she had sung with élan over the years, the generations of actresses from Vyjayanthimala to Vindhiya she had sung for, the galaxy of venerable composers, gifted lyricists and talented singers she had worked with who were no longer around to watch her cross this milestone… or was she simply filled with memories of the sleepy Pallapatla where it all began…

S Janaki Lalitha Geethalu

Lalitha Geethalu are integral part of Telugu music . They are similar to Bhava geete in Kannada and Marathi .These are not songs for gaudy technicolor dance routine’s but songs that wake up our hidden and forgotten feelings . S Janaki rendered several such songs in TV, Radio & LP Records. We collected few of many classics and presenting them as a special compilation to mark completion of 55th year of S Janaki in film music .
Most of the songs in this compilation are from old gramophone records. Intiro Yee Gopabaludu is from Radio Bhakthi Ranjani . Bhalera oh Gayaka & Lalitha Kala saradhi are from a special album called “Ghanudu Ghantasala” released as a tribute to Late Shri Ghantasala .Pachani palleturu is another rare album released in 80’s where the folk and village life are decribed extremely well . The aspirations of the village people are brought out in this album in vocals of Janaki .Andhra Punya kshetralu along with tender voice of SPB was very popular in 70’s. We will be adding more songs in this compilation soon.

Thanks a lot to those people who brought out these rare gems (especially SJ-PBS Private songs) available to current generation. We collected them and playing here for benefit of all!

Ee Duryodhana Dussasana !

This Song is one of the best (if not greatest) songs ever created in history of Telugu cinema. Prathighatana is movie which is all about a struggle of a college lecturer against a local Don and his illegal activities. Heroine Vijaya santhi delivered an extra ordinary performance in this movie. Chandra mohan contributed his best as a helpless husband.

When the heroine goes to court against the villain (Charan raj), they insult her in a very bad way. The husband who is a coward can’t even oppose that and he is scared to accept her after that incident. Heroine goes to college as a part of her job after that incident. By that time, college students draw vulgar pictures of her on board insulting her. When she tries to erase those pictures and explain them to behave properly, one student throws a stone on her face and she starts bleeding. This was the situation and some powerful dialogues by Vijaya santhi were planned by the director Krishna. But, Legendary lyricist Veturi suggested to create a song for this situation.Ramaoji rao, producer of movie also liked the idea of song. Veturi created this song in very less time. Krishna well impressed with the words in the song took back his idea of dialogues and gave a big “YES” to the song. Chakravarthy tuned the song in no time.
S Janaki was invited to sing the song and she was left with goosebumps after looking at the lyrics. She gave a spellbound performance for the song which turned out to be a big hit and a major reason for success of movie. Vijaya santhi gave a powerful performance in the song ! Movie won state nandi awards for Ramoji rao (Best Movie), Veturi (Best lyrics),Vijayasanthi (Best actress) & S Janaki (Best singer). Leaving commercial elements like awards & popularity of the song aside, this song still remains great as it expressed in 5 minutes, which several books cannot explain in 500 pages. Veturi proved power of his pen ! He personally believed that this is one of the most purposeful songs he had ever written and S Janaki who rendered this song at her emotional best explains that it is not a song, but a KAVYAM (EPIC) in itself!

Though this translation cannot do complete justice to the lyrical value of Veturi’s imagination,we are providing complete lyrics and meaning of the song, for comfort of listeners who are not familiar with telugu. Paying heartful tributes to Late Veturi, Chakravarthy and living legend S Janaki through this post !
In this song the heroine character questions the students, who did illicit drawings of naked women on class board as follows. ..

Pallavi :-
Ee Dhuryodhana dussasana durvinitha lokam lo
Rakthasrulu chindusthu rasthunna shokham tho
Maro maha Bharatham, Aaarava Vedam
Manabhanga parvam lo. …. Mathru Hrudaya Nirvedam

Meaning :-
In this world full of illegal activities by people like Duryodhana & Dussasana, I am Writing the Sadness in the heart of a mother in Manabhanga parva of new Mahabharat which is sixth Veda. I am writing this while shedding tears of blood filled with sorrow.

Explanation :-
Mahabharath is known as panchama veda. It is a respect given to the epic that it is given equal status of 4 vedas. This Epic is divided in to different chapters, which are called as Parvas. In one parva, Droupadi Nivedana is very famous, where Draupadi explains the pain and agony in her heart to Krishna. Draupadi is Wife of Pandavas in Epic Mahabharat. Her husbands loose her in a game against Kauravas (100 Brothers among whom Duryodahana and Dussasana are notorious characters). Dushyasana insults Draupadi in the court on order of Duryodhana and no one helps her in that situation, not even her husbands or king. She becomes helpless and prays krishna to protect her dignity.

Veturi compares the character of heroine to that of Draupadi and that character express her pain in his words. … that she is going to mention in the new mahabharata ( the present situation of country ) which will be sixth Veda (as mentioned, Mahabharata is called fifth Veda) and with in this new epic, in chapter of loose of her dignity, she will do the sorrowful explanation of Mother’s feelings.

Charanam 1:-

Puduthune palakedchi
Utti Jampalakedchi
Perigi pedda kaagane, muddu muripalakedchi. ..
Thanuvatha dochukunna thanayulu meeru. .

Meaning :-
You are those sons who
(1)started crying for milk as soon as you took birth,
(2)then you started crying to be taken care. (Kids cry before mother to carry them as they cannot walk )
(3)When you became elder, you started crying for love and attention from women. ..This way you have stolen (exploited) whole body of women.

Magasiritho brathakaleka keechukulai, kutila kama mechakulai
sthree jathini avamanisthe. .. Mee ammala sthanyam tho, mee akkala raktham tho
rangarinchi raasthunna eenade meekosam. ..
Maro Maha Bharatham, Aaarava Vedam
Manabhanga parvam lo. …. Mathru Hrudaya Nirvedam

Meaning :-
If you start insulting women (whom you exploited through out your life) like Keechaka (another villain character in Mahabharth, who tries to insult Draupadi and was punished severely by Bheema for that) not being able to live with rich manhood (which a mother gifted you), I will write my new Mahabharatha today for you with such an ink which is mixture of the breast milk of your mother and blood of your sister ( Here Veturi stresses that every women deserves same respect as given to mother or sister)

Charanam 2:-
kanna maha papaniki aadadi thalliga maari
Mee kandalu penchinadii gundelatho kaada. .?

Meaning:-
Is it not the milk from same part of body of a women (which you picturised so badly ) that have given strength to your muscles..? That woman transforms herself to a mother for the biggest sin of giving birth to you!! ( Here Veturi warns not to be proud of manhood and insult women. )

Errani thana rakthane thellani nethuru chesi
penchukunna thalli oka aadadani marichara. .?

Meaning:-
Did you forget that a mother, who converts her red blood to white milk (to feed you) is also a women..?

kanabada leda akkada papaluga mee charithra. .?
Enado meerunchina letha pedavi mudra. .?

Meaning:-
Can’t you see your history as a kid there..? and the mark that you have left as a kid ( Here, veturi warns again not to look at women with wrong vision and to respect every women like mother)

Prathi bharathi sathi manam, chandramathi mangalyam..

Meaning:-
Dignity of every Indian women is like Mangalyam (Holy thread in Hindu religion ) of Chandra mathi ( As per Hindu Epics, Chandramathi’s married holy thread was visible only to her husband, so here meaning is that every Indian women has her hidden feelings, dignity and character towards her husband only. It should be treated with respect and confidential . It is not a topic to be discussed in public).

marma sthanam kadadi mee janma sthanam, Manavathaki moksham ichu punya kshethram.

Meaning:-
It is not just a hidden place (The place which you are very curious to see and insult), but It is your Birth place. .. It is the same place that gives completion for the humanity.
S Janaki renders these lines in a way which cannot be explained, but only be experienced!

S Janaki Hindi Songs!!

“Main tho ghunghuroo bhandure thum aao giridhaare” may be the first time when S Janaki rendered a Hindi song for a straight movie though she rendered some songs in dubbed versions of South Indian languages from 50’s (even before the song mentioned above). This was a beautiful Meera Bhajan tuned by M S Baburaj for a Malayalam movie .
During mid 80’s she sang several songs in Hindi movies especially in music of Bappi lahri, Lakhsmikanth Pyarelal. She had some notable hits in Ilayaraja’s Hindi projects also. O P nayyar gave her songs in Mangni (Remake of Telugu movie Niraajanam ). Salilda gave her songs in “Dil ka saathi dil”. She sang few songs to R D Burman, Jaidev, Ravindra Jain, Anu malik, Anand Milind etc .. Duets with Kishore Kumar became instant hits. Similar was the case with his son Amit Kumar. Balu – Janaki had some hits in Hindi too. Mhd -Aziz & Bappi Lahri also had decent hits with Janaki. There existed a period when she had to go for recordings to Mumbai and return to Chennai for recordings in south Indian movies on same day.
However she opted to restrict herself to South Indian songs because of her busy schedules and she was getting extremely challenging songs in south Indian languages compared to Hindi songs at that period. This compilation had some randomly hand picked Hindi songs. Tried to cover different variety of songs from motherly “Toone mera doodh piya hain” to sensuous “Kya than kya man kya jeevan “. From classic “Prabhu more avgun chith na dharo” to fun filled “Hindi boli urdu boli” , from Romantic “Dil main ho thum ” to her award winning dance number “Pag paadam” .

Keep mailing us for any songs to be added .Enjoy this rare collection and stay tuned for more …

Mouna Poratam Music by S Janaki

Mouna Poratam (Silent War) is all about struggle of a tribal girl ,who is betrayed by a govt.officer. It shows how a tribal girl fights to give proper identity to her kid. This movie needed emotional songs than regular melodies. S Janaki took up the task as music director, while SPB supported her in giving background score. As SPB selected S Janaki as lead playback in most of the movies for which he gave music like Mayuri, Padamati Sandhya ragam, Jacki, Kongu mudi, Bharyamani etc…, Janaki selected him as the only male voice in this album. Veturi was obvious choice for such emotional melodies to Ushakiran movies as he already gave timeless classic “Ee Duryodhana dusaasana” for Prathighatana movie.

Mounaporatam turned to be a super hit movie which ran for silver jubilee. S Janaki didn’t continue to give music for movies due to her busy schedules. But, she gave music to some private albums later. This movie strengthened relationships of S Janaki with Usha Kiran movies. She continued to render songs occasionally to their T V Serials and Advertisements for Priya pickles etc.. Enjoy melodies from this movie …

Songs List :-

Mounaporatam launched Yamuna as heroine in Telugu film industry with playful vocals of Janaki singing “Yaala Yaalaga “. Janaki brings out the innocence of a tribal girl in her voice with beautiful humming and her trade mark “laughter”.
Among two duets with SPB, one is a regular tribal kind of song(only song penned by Jaladi in this album) and other duet is a underrated melody. Balu-Janaki as usual excels in their coordination in “Lolilita ” song. Words “lolilita”/”Khali ghata” are used to show that heroine came to see the city and she is getting used to some unknown world to her.
“Dora Raaka kosam” is a sad song. Innocent tribal girl sings this song with hope of seeing her beloved once again When the hero betrays the heroine and leaves her all alone!
“Ye bapu nerpinadi” is a Veturi-Janaki play all the way. He used several examples of such situations when women were left alone in history in this song with his magical words. He uses beautiful rhyming words which enhance the over all feel of this song. S Janaki rendered this song in a very high pitch in her inimitable style.

Janaki sings for A R Rahman !

Rahman used singing skills of S Janaki in quite a few occassions. Fantasy is the first album they worked together, where Rahman worked as major keyboard player and when he started giving music in films,he chose S Janaki in movies like Gentleman, kathalan, Uyire, Jodi etc .. He continued giving her songs even in new Millennium.
She received Tamil Nadu State award for her song in Sangamam, which came in this combination. When asked to speak about Rahman she says with a blush on her face “I had sung several beautiful songs for Ilayaraja, which were real gems. After IR’s songs and before people started forgetting me, Rahman gave me beautiful songs so that new generation also gets connected to my songs. ” When asked about Janaki in a documentary for her birthday, he said “When you give a song to her, it is no more Rahman’s song, she owns the song so much that it becomes S Janaki’s song “.

Some of the songs in this compilation have both telugu and tamil versions! Enjoy the songs …
