S Janaki – M Balamurali Krishna

Balamurali Krishna – A Genius who needs no introduction in Indian Classical Music. He was a vaggeyakara himself and popularised many Keerthanas of Thyagraja, Ramadasu, Annamayya, Purandaradasaru among others in 20th – 21st century.

Janaki amma’s musical relationship with Balamurali sir is more than 5 decades old. Together, they sang in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam movies.

(1) Swaramanjari – Muthayala Pallaki – Satyam.

This is an interesting ragamalika composed by Satyam sir for Telugu movie ‘ Muthyala Pallaki’. When speaking about her achievements and satisfactory works in Film fields, Janaki amma mentions about this song as most precious feather in her crown. Their vocals in this song takes us to some unknown heavens!

(2) Vasantha Galiki – Srikakulandhra Mahavishnuvu katha – Pendyala

This song must be the very first duet from these two great artists together. This song is not a semi classical rendition but a lovely romantic number with ‘love’ in each and every word from pen of Pingali garu. This is one song that Balamurali garu would sing when ever he spoke about his small yet fruitful career in movies. Listen to the way young vocals of Janaki amma flows effortlessly in tune set by Pendyala garu.

(3) Padalepam karagipoye – Srikakulandhra Mahavishnuvu katha – Pendyala

Story of Varudhuni – Pravarkaya from “Manu charitra” written by Allasani peddanna, who was the foremost among Ashtadiggajalu (8 great poets in court of SriKrishna devaryalau) has become part of entertainment in various forms in Telugu communities. Many dramas, musical shows were based on this story. Not only theatre but Cinema also used this story many times and gave us wonderful memories.

This song tuned by Pendyala garu, written by Pingali garu is also based on the same story for Telugu movie “Srikakulandhra Mahavishnuvu katha” . Janaki amma and Balamurali krishna garu sang it off screen. Dancer Vijayalakshmi performed both characters on screen..!

(4) Siri Siri Laali – Bhakta Prahlada – S Rajeswara Rao.

Balamurali sir acted in few movies and most memorable role was his portrayal of Narada in Bhakta prahalda, where he sang beautiful songs. This song in particular is a lullaby to Prahlada by his mother Leelavathi. Balamurali sir joins to make it more precious!

(5) Chinna Chinna Kanna – Bhakta Prahlada – S Rajeswara Rao.

Bhakta Prahlada was released in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi simultaneously. Janaki amma sang for actress Anjali devi in all versions. Hindi and Kannada versions of this song was sung by PBS-S Janaki, which is quite interesting as PBS sir got to give play back to Balamurali sir! Tamil version is equally enjoyable as Telugu one..

(6)Ranga Baara Turanga Nayana – Navakoti Narayana

Navakoti Narayana is a biographical movie of Saint Purandara Dasa. Balamurali sang immortal Dasara padagalu in this movie. In this particular song, he just did the humming part while Janaki amma rendered complete solo in her golden string like young vocals.

(7) Nanna Hrudaya Veena Meeti – Sri Raghavendra Vaibhava – Chitti Babu

This is yet another musical in Kannada filled with melodies from Balamurali sir. Interestingly, this song is a mirror image of above song where Janaki amma did the humming and Balamuarli sir sang complete song! This song is composed by Legendary Veena Maestro Chitti Babu sir! Telugu version is also song by them for the dubbed version of the movie.

(8) Raghuvara ninnu – Ende Mohangal Poovirinju – V Dakshinamurty

One of the most interesting songs in career of Janaki amma. Amazing is the way she sings the swaras (with minimal training in classical music) competing with experts in classical music Balamurali sir and K J Yesudas sir ..! Though Janaki amma sang other Malayalam songs like Neela Neela vanamatha/Manasin Aarohanam, this song is just outstanding! Raja sir used this song as is in Tamil movie ‘Isai Paadum thendral’.

(9) Nambide Nina nadha devathe – Sandya Raga

This is one of most popular semi-classical songs in history of Kannada cinema. Three versions are sung by Balamurali sir, Bheemsen Joshi sir and Janaki amma respectively. Janaki amma mentioned in stage show that her version was also composed by Balamurali sir and G K Venkatesh arranged background score for the same. What a composition and what a singing!

(10) Thodu Thodu – Thodu – M Balamuralikrishna

Balamurali sir is really a wonder who proved his mettle where he worked. He not only sang and composed in film music, he won national award as best music director also. Janaki amma sang for his music direction in Telugu movie called ‘Thodu’ in 1997. Though movie was not released in theatres and the songs became rare, she won Nandi award for ‘Nadila pravahinchede jeevitham’ song. Sharing yet another rare classic from the movie. Though Janaki amma sang few more songs with Balamurali sir, ending the collection with this lovely lyrical beauty of C Narayana Reddy sir!

Their collaboration was not limited to movie songs, they released few devotional albums together and sang in Ardhana utsavalu. He was a true genius, dear most child of Goddess Saraswathi. People learn music, Music came to him by itself…His departure from us to his own abode is extremely sad news for every music lover of the Nation.

This pic is from visit of Janaki amma with Balamurali sir few days before his demise!

S Janaki Purandara Dasa Songs in Kannada Cinema

Songs of Purandara dasaru had become a part and parcel of Kannada culture, tradition and civilisation. They are not just devotional songs filled with vocabulary praising the lord but they deal with every aspect of our day to day life and presence of Good and Lord in every moment of our lives!

Janaki amma got to sing beautiful Dasara padas in Kannada cinema. Sharing 10 songs here..

(1) Kandu Kandu Nee Enna – Bhale Adrushtavo Adrushta – Vijayabhaskar

This is a song where Dasaru just surrenders himself to Lord.. He pleads the Lord not to leave him all alone and not to leave his hand in hard times! He pleads – ‘I have no one else in this world but you .. You are my mother, father, friend and relative’ .

This song is epitome of surrendering nature – ‘Samarpana’ of a devotee .. Vijayabhaskar sir tuned every single word of this song with a perfect care and Janaki amma rendered it with all devotion. She sang it so soft, soothing and dedicated that it is really hard not to fall in love with this great song!

(2) Acharavillada nalige – Upasane – Vijayabhaskar

In this song, Dasaru asks the ‘culture less tongue’ to leave the bad habit of cribbing about others and to give up rumours. For Dasaru, Devotion is not just praising Lord, it is cleansing our hearts and doing good deads.

He advises here not to waste time in talking worldly matters but to dedicate for goodness by singing glories of the Lord! It is Vijayabhaskar sir again who gave the required ‘movie look’ to this song and Janaki amma rendering in one of her career best musicals!

(3) Poogadiliro Ranga – Haalu Jenu – G K Venkatesh

What a great imagination great soul ‘Purandara Dasaru’ had! In this song he requests Krishna not to leave home telling that all his devotees are eagerly waiting for him to steal him away and save in their hearts! He compares Lord to a ‘invaluable thing’ when he says ‘Dorakada vasthuvu dorakitu thamagendu’ and praises his beauty and character at same time in lines ‘Aganitha guna ninna jagatha naariyarella hagayeaagi nodidharu Gopalane’ !

G K Venkatesh sir is music director for this soulful melody. Rajkumar sir’s acting on screen gave a perfect filmy look to the song..!

(4) Lalisidalu magana yashode – Devaru kotta thangi – Vijayabhaskar

Dasaru explains beauty of Motherly love in this song. He explains how Mother Yashoda took care of Little Krishna in this song. Kannada Language is celebrated at her greatest legacy in his songs! Just listen to words like ‘ Aralele magayi berali gongura bittu’ they sound simple, sweet and nostalgic at same time! Listening to this song, every devotee will fall in love with Lord and every person would remember his/her mother!!

This song is another ‘Gem’ from combination of Vijayabhaskar – S Janaki. Their combination is so rich in quality that almost every song from this combination remains top in class!!

(5) Mella Mellane bandene – Mrugalaya – Rajan Nagendra

Childhood of Lord Krishna is most important and best aspect of his life for many devotees. Many devotees tend to remember Lord in his happy childhood days playing with gopis and many songs came in classical music describing his mischief and naughtiness in childhood! In this song, it is gopis complaining about all teasing and fun that Krishna does with them !

In movie, this is a dance sequence with interesting background set by composer duo ‘Rajan – Nagendra’. As for many other songs, they chose Janaki amma to do justice to their composition and as always she did not leave a second chance to do so!

(6) Thalu Thleleo Rangayya – Adda Dari – Rajan Nagendra

Ninda sthuthi – Praising in disguise of complaining, is one of major ways of glorifying their deity by many devotees and poets of Indian classical music. This song serves as a perfect example for the same!
In this song, Dasaru says it is ‘enough and enough’ with Krishna but he continuously praises his activities ..! Listeners would enjoy the poetry and devotion at the same time!

This song is composed by Rajan – Nagendra for movie ‘Adda Dari’ and we can see ‘Dubbing Janaki’ dancing in the song who became popular as character artist and Dubbing artist in Telugu cinema in later days of her career.

(7) Brindavanadalu aaduvan yaare – Maalathi Maadhava – T G Lingappa

Dasaru belonged to an era much before musical trinity ‘Thyagayya – Muthuswamy Deekshitar – Syama Sastry’. He was pioneer in bringing music close to common people by writing it in spoken language Kannada instead of difficult Sanskrit. He composed songs that ranged from bhajans to krithis. Listen to this song where he describes the greatness of Lord Krishna starting with a question .. ‘Who is the one playing in Brindavana’

Janaki amma rendered this song for a tune set by T G Lingappa.

(8) Gummana Kariyadire – Rajan Nagendra

This is a Devaranama where Lord Krishna explains his version when encountered by mother Yashoda for all his mischief and complaints from Gopis! This explanation would be very similar to the one small kids in our home’s give to get away from their troubles! Greatness of purandara dasaru was bringing most complicated emotions of devotion in simple language and link them with our day to day life..!

P B Srinivas sir sings the beginning of the song and Janaki amma lends her voice for little Krishna in rest of the song ..:)

She released an album called ‘Balakrishnane baaro’ with 8 exclusive Dasara songs. Above song is also present in this album (with a different look all together)

(9) Bagyada Lakshmi baramma

If all above songs were singing praises of Lord Krishna/ Lord Vishnu, this song is all about glorifying Goddess Lakshmi. He requests her to come and stay in house and bring all prosperity to her devotees.

Although Janaki amma sang this song for a private album, it became hugely popular in Karnataka. Janaki amma’s version of this song is played in many temples regularly even now!

(10) Shree Gananatha , lambodara

She sang few more Dasara pada’s in private albums. Ending this article with this keerthana.
One of greatest contributions of Purnadara Dasaru to Classical music was systematising the early music lessons and making it easy for every one to learn! This composition is generally taught as one of initial lessons in Carnatic classical music..

(1) Main to gunguroo – Ninamaninja Kaalpaadukal – M S Baburaj

This must have been very first time Janaki amma sang a full length Hindi song in South indian movie. Co incidentally, it is very first song Baburaj sir composed for Janaki amma. He was such an expert in bringing out very best of Hindustani essence. He used Janaki amma’s golden string like young vocals to establish the longing and devotion of Meera bai in this evergreen Meera Bhajan… This song served as a kick start for beautiful melodies that came from this combination.

(2) Tu Hai Raja – Varumayin Niram Sivappu – M S Viswanathan

Balachander sir would not compromise in any experimentation and musically he was boundless as he had great MSV sir with him in most of his musicals. ‘Varumayin Niram Sivappu’ is a wonderful musical from this combination. ‘Tu Hai Raja’, an underrated gem from this movie had Janaki amma singing complete song in Hindi ending with soothing ‘Poove poove’ in Tamil movie and ‘Andam chandam anurgam’ in Telugu version ‘Akali rajyam’. It was P B Srinivas sir who penned such a romantic lyrics. This song was rich not only in vocabulary but also in wonderful imaginative lyrics! On screen beautiful pair of 80’s Sridevi – Kamalhasan added beauty to the song!

(3) Kaise kahoon – Nandu – Ilayaraja

Without second thought, Raja sir explored everything musically possible in Janaki amma’s voice. In Nandu movie, he paired her vocals with Hindi singer Bhupinder. High pitched voice of Janaki amma and rich base voice of Bhupinder sir were simply perfect for this melodious composition. Hindi music director Bappi lahri got to listen the song from Swaminathan while rerecording of the movie. He asked ‘Who is this girl singing so sweet’ and Swaminathan sir replied with a pride in face ‘She is not a girl but a famous singer in South’. This is the beginning of collaboration of Bappida with Janaki amma which continued for nearly decade with more than 100 songs in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada ..

(4) Hum Hain Akele – Nandu – Ilayaraja

There is another dance sequence in same movie ‘Nandu’ which was a out and out Hindi solo. Janaki amma brought the mujra affect but keeping South Indian audience in mind. Her brigas and breath taking improvisations to this dance number are awesome!

(5) Hum hain jawan – Nandu – Ilayaraja

This was the original song composed for above situation but got shelved for some unknown reasons. Luckily, the recording is preserved and we got to listen this lovely melody. Raja sir must have loved his own composition that he gave life to it in another Tamil solo ‘Pen Mayile’ also sung by Janaki amma.. Such a lovely composition and romantic lyrics it had!!

(6) Tholi chupu cheli raisna – Rajkumar – Ilayaraja

Rajkumar a Telugu movie, remake of Kannada ‘Chalisuva Modagalu’ had wonderful music composed by Raja sir. In this duet, Balu sir sings Telugu lines and Janaki amma sings Hindi lines. Heroine in this story is from North India and hence director must have opted for Hindi lines in this song .. Janaki amma’s expressive ‘acha’/’shukriya’/’phir’ and Balu sir’s soulful singing would haunt us for days together after listening to this melody. Raja sir’s piano/violins ..aah ..!

(7)Jheel kinare – Thadakam – A T Ummer

Thadakam is a Malayalam movie which had a Hindi song composed by A T Ummer sir and lyrics again by PBS sir!! Everything in this song is beautiful – whether it is two beautiful girls (Seema and Sumalatha) singing in open air rowing their boats full of flowers or beautiful lyrics of PBS sir or classic tune set with Kashmiri touch by Ummer sir or Janaki amma’s full throated singing full pf energy and emotion!

(8) Khana Peena Mouj udana – Sri Krishnadevaraya – T G Lingappa

Sri Krishna Devaraya – A movie which Kannada cinema must be proud of. Rajkumar sir was just perfect as Krishnadevaraya in this movie. It had evergreen songs composed by T G Lingappa sir, almost all songs sung by Janaki amma along with PBS sir, Suseela amma, Solamangalam Rajyalakhmi amma and P Leela amma ..! It is really an album to cherish forever for every admirer of Janaki amma!
For similar situations, prior melodies like ‘Rasika Salade’ and others had Kannada lyrics with Arabic/Persian feel but this dance sequence had complete Hindi lyrics ..!

(9) Mere dil ki dhadkan – Satyam

This is again similar to above song, which is not from a movie or private album but for her own personal recording. She must have loved the tune for immortal ‘Ye divilo virisna parijathamo’ composed by Satyam sir so much that she requested PBS sir (who was expert in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, Urdu) to write Hindi lryics for it. He wrote it in such a way as if he was second to none!! Janaki amma rendered this in her own tape recorder and preserved it. Lucky are we that she gifted the same to all of us after all these years! There are couple more instances where she sang Hindi lines in South Indian songs like ‘Mana Jeevithalu Priya natakalu – Magadheerudu’/’Meri Awaaz Sun – Vaa Intha Pakkam’ etc .. but this song would be a perfect ending for this article dealing with her Hindi Lines in South Indian movies..

Balu sings – Janaki hums!

This is compilation of few songs where Balu sir sings almost all the song and Janaki amma adds beauty to it with her aalapana/humming.

‘Those songs undoubtedly stand incomplete without her eternal humming’ – remarked Balu sir when talking about ‘Ravi Varamake’ in one stage show.

Let us go it detail with 10 among many such songs.

(1) Ravi Varmake -Ravanude Ramudaithe – G K Venkatesh

Ravi Varamake is ‘Mother’ of all such songs. There were many occasions before this song when Janaki amma gave wonderful aalapana like ‘Ee Pagalu Reyiga (From Sirisampadalu)’/’Bhuvana Mohini’ (Bhama Vijayam) with Ghantasala garu and PB Srinivas garu. But huge appreciation she got for ‘Ravi Varamake’ might have given birth to creation of many more songs like this.
Actually, Ravi Varamake was initially a Kannada song ‘Ravi Varmana kunchada’ sung by P B Srinivas sir with alapana of Janaki amma. GKV sir repeated same magic (if not better and refined) in Telugu for Darsakendra Dasari Narayana rao’s musical movie.

(2) Sumam Prathi Sumam – Maharshi – Ilayaraja

Vamsi was the director in Telugu cinema well known for his musicals. Raja sir experimented with Balu sir and Janaki amma in all possible ways in movies directed by Vamsi sir. Duets of ultimate variety came from this combination. ‘Sumam Prathi sumam’ stands right at the top of the list.

Lyrics ‘Venuva Veenaya Emiti Naadamu’ by Jonnavithula garu in melodious vocals of Balu sir sounds as if it is a heartfelt tribute to outstanding aalapana of Janaki amma..

(3) Kanne Pillavani – Akali Rajyam – M S Viswanathan

M S Viswanathan sir composed music for lesser number of movies in Telugu compared to Tamil. But ‘EACH and EVERY’ song composed by him in Telugu carried his signature and became extremely popular. His collaboration with Balachander sir gave Telugu audience wonderful melodies that would live for ever. He experimented like never before -never after in these movies. ‘Kanne Pillavani’ from ‘Akali Rajayam’ is a glorious results of such experiments. It is a song where heroine(Sridevi) challenges hero (Kamal Hasan) to match her aalapana with fitting lyrics. It was actually a challenge between Music director MSV sir and Lyricist ‘Acharaya Athreya’ garu .. Athreya garu was well known in hey days for conveying very difficult emotions in simple language and he repeated same magic here.

When Balu sir exclaims ‘Beautiful’ after an aalaap of Janaki amma, he exclaimed as it really came from his heart appreciating her artistry!

(4) Kalise Prathi sandhyalo – Aalapana – Ilayaraja

Alaapana – Another musical from Vamsi with trio of Balu-Janaki-Ilayaraja giving best of their performances. In an event, Raja sir mentioned that aalapana is one of his favourite most albums. True to his words, he gave outstanding numbers in this movie.
Two songs in this movie ‘Aa Kanulalo’ and ‘Kalise Prathi Sandhyalo’ compete with each other for the same category here. In both songs, Janaki accompanied melodious singing of Balu sir with wonderful alaapanna. But, selecting ‘Kalise Parthi sandhyalo’ for the hidden divine presence in this composition.

Just listen to the way she picks up pallavi after a complete stretch of alaapana after charanam.

(5) Emani Pilavali – Bhuvaneswari – Satyam

Satyam sir right from his very first movie gave challenging compositions to Janaki amma in Telugu and Kannada. Although he gave more songs in Kannada, her presence was very much felt in almost every movie he composed in Telugu as well. Balu sir and Janaki amma got to sing many interesting songs composed by him. ‘Emani Pillavi’ is a composition that falls under this category. For Kannada audience, this song reminds evergreen ‘Nee Roopave’ from ‘Sita Ramu’.

(6) Rangulalo Kalavo – Abhinandana – Ilayaraja

Abhinandana – an out and out musical from trio Rajs-Balu-Janaki. Although Raja sir reused tunes from his earlier Tamil movies for almost all songs in this movie, Telugu versions had 100% nativity.
Acharya Athreya garu proved that he could give soul stirring lyrics to existing tunes. Abhinandana ruled music charts then and it did not loose it strength even a bit till now. Coming to Rangulalao Kalavo, it is appreciation of actress beauty as in many other songs of this concept and heroine acknowledging the same. Beginning aalapana of this song had become such a signature for her that it is played to introduce Janaki amma in many felicitations from then.

She sang as if an angel is singing from some unknown heavens!

(7) Ninu Choodaka Nenundalenu – Neerajanam – O P Nayyar

Same producer of Abhinandana gave another musical called ‘Neerajanam’ to Telugu audience. For this movie, he could get Legendary music director of Hindi cinema – O P Nayyar sir. This movie was a disaster at box office but will be remembered for ever for it’s finest music! Complete album had Balu sir and Janaki amma singing solos and duets and blessing a ‘bliss’ to audience! As soon as recording of this song – ‘Ninu choodaka nenundalenu; was completed, O P Nayyar sir appreciated Janaki amma for her wonderful aalapana and especially for the way she sang 4 different modulations for same line in last repeat of pallavi. He even composed a full length solo with same tune in Hindi movie ‘Mangini’ to be sung by Janaki amma, Bad luck that Hindi version had very poor recording compared to Telugu song!

This song really had soulful rendition of Balu sir .. the way expressed each and every word describing love reminds us of great Moh Rafi sahab!

(8) Padana Venuvunai – Sundari Subbarao – Satyam

Another song composed by Satyam sir which proved why Balu sir is ‘King of Romance’.. Each and every word he sang in this song was dipped in romantic honey! Even most unromantic person would turn romantic listening to this lyrics of Veturi garu. Janaki amma’s presence with her alaapana is like a cool breeze in this song!

(9) Nee Thiyyani pedavulu – Kanchana Ganga – Chakravarty

One of the most melodious duets ever composed by Chakravrty garu , who was otherwise known for his rhythm based songs. Not only alaap, but every thing Janaki amma did in this song was romantic!
Their combination in this song just sweet and sweeter ! In this song, Balu sir + Janaki amma = Gulab Jamoon+ Ice cream 🙂

(10) Bhavanalokatai – Poola Pallaki – Ilayaraja

There are many other songs which we shall detail in another article, but wanted to end this article with this rare and underrated gem from ‘Poola Pallaki’.
Generally, alaapana is followed by lyrics but in this song alaapana of Janaki amma completely overlaps lyrical singing of Balu sir. Such songs are very sweet on ears, but extremely difficult to render. How difficult it would have been to record this song when both of them had to sing their own versions without disturbing but enhancing each other’s singing!
This might be very reason why Raja sir insisted on Balu sir and Janaki amma for best of his composition in their respective hey days!

Top Ten songs from S Janaki – Krishna Kumari (A Tribute)

Krishna Kumari – An actress well known for her looks and talent at the same time. She was extremely successful in Telugu and Kannada cinema for a period of 2 decades with rare appearances in Tamil and Malayalam. Melodies and Memories of S Janaki – M S Baburaj

M S Baburaj – S Janaki … Were they born for each other or were they born to gift us many nostalgic memories..!

It was Babukka who could extract nectar from golden string like young vocals of SJ to fullest. If Janaki amma had anything to share about Baburaj sir, it is pure admiration. She becomes so perfectly nostalgic when ever any one brings the topic of Baburaj sir before her.. How could she not be..! Just look at the melodies that came from this combination…This combination that started around 1962 lasted till 1978 churning out melodies every single year.Just in 1967, Babukka created many ‘Janaki’ centric albums like ‘Anweshichu Kandethiyilla’, ‘Iruttinte Aathmaavu’ (SJ being only playback singer in entire album), ‘Pareeksha’, Karutha Rathrikal’ etc..

This article is a detailed study of those golden melodies..

It was a Meera bhajan ‘Main toh Gunguroo’ that Janaki first sang to Baburaj. But, It must have been immortal ‘Thaliritta Kinakal than’ where Baburaj discovered the genius called ‘Janaki’ and would make her choice for many of his creations to be made in female voice from then! With success of all 4 songs from ‘Bhargavi Nilayam’, their combination gained higher commercial success..!

Janaki amma would sing his melodies with all of her heart and soul and thus came gems like ‘Suryakanthi’, ‘Eeranuduthukondambaram’, ‘oru Kochu Swapanthin’..

He was extremely proficinet in creating Hindusthani style songs without loosing flavor of Malayalam .. ‘Avidunen ganam kelkan’, ‘Aardhikayude pooja kusumam’, ‘Thane Thirinjum maranjum’ are such ‘Ghazalish’ classics he created in voice of young SJ. Even after giving such gems, their combination was not restricted to Hindusthani style. In fact songs like ‘Anzana kannezhuthi’, ‘Vaakacharthu’, ‘Saranam Nin charanam’ etc.. had 100% Carnatic classical music flavor..

Most wonderful factor in their melodies was their ability to bring out 1000 feelings perfectly in a 3 minute song..! ‘Kanmaniye’, ‘Kalindi Thadathile Radha’ etc .. were filled with nothing but pure melancholy and songs like ‘Madhumasa Rathri’, ‘Kannukal Karinkoovala pookkal’, ‘Manasa Sarassil’ were absolutely romantic..! Even though melodies were their forte, they were not being in creating variety of songs like westernised ‘Manase Aswasichu’, Open and Lound ‘Kattaruvi Chilanku katti’ and even sensuous ‘Purushanmarude Gandham’ ..! Devotional classics that came from them were absolutely stunning … If Christian songs like ‘Pavananaam Aattidaya’ and ‘Yesumathave’ are remembered till date, so are Hindu devotionals like ‘Vakacharthu’, ‘Krishna Dayamaya’ etc.. Interestingly this combination which started with a Meera Bhajan ended with another classic on lord Krishna ‘Nee Evide Kanna, Karmukil Varna’..

Another name we simply cannot ignore and is part of the golden trio is P Bhaksaran master. If Babukka was tune and Janaki amma was voice, Bhaskaran master was the words in many of those ever living melodies.. Words fall short to praise his greatness.. Just listen to ‘Iru kanner thullikal’,’Kavilathe kanner kandu’ to know how great his imagination was..! No Malayalam interview of Janaki amma completes without mentioning these songs and praising Baburaj sir and Bhaskaran master..!

90% of songs Babukka composed for Janaki amma were solos.. However, the duets he created for her were just wonderful! ‘Akale Akale neelakasam’ by KJY-SJ is easily one of the best Malayalam duets ever recorded. ‘Pathiravayailla’ is Babukka’s magic in vocals of KJY-SJ. ‘ Veedayala Villakku venum’ with PBS, ‘Kannonu thurakku deepangale’ with P Leela, ‘Pandu nammal kanditilla’ with B Vasantha, ‘Manimukile’ with AK Sukumaran are few other memorable duets..

In terms of numbers, Janaki amma sang more songs to many other genius composers.. but when ever you discuss Janaki amma’s Malayalam songs, first song that comes is Baburaj … Their music just proves the fact that ‘Music cannot be measured’. This article for sure cannot do any justice to their musical offerings as the works they did together cannot be described, they are just meant to be experienced ..!! Still, this is a sincere effort to place their classics in a single place for convenience of their admirers..

Babukka, We love you, love you and will love for ever!!

S Janaki sings for Sridevi

Sridevi – An actress who tasted all flavours of success in her long journey in Indian cinema in different languages..! This article is a study of the beautiful melodies that Janaki amma sang for this extraordinary talent!!

Sridevi played (is playing) a grand Innings as lead actress in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. Janaki amma sang for her in all 5 languages and they gave us many hits to cherish!

As a child artist, Sridevi started her career in ‘Maa Nanna Nirdoshi’ Telugu movie where Janaki amma gave play back to her. Later on , she sang couple of songs for her when she was child artist. But, Best of their combination started when Sridevi became lead actress. Especially, songs in ‘Padinaru vayadinile’ started a series of all time classic melodies from this combination. Telugu version ‘Padaherlla vayasu’ saw equal if not more success. Sridevi was established as top most heroine in both languages with these movies.

Tamil cinema saw best of this combination. 3 songs from ‘Kavi Kuyil’ – 3 gems with early tunes of Raja sir. Many of the Kamal-Sridevi duets like ‘Perai Sollava’ from ‘Guru’, ‘Radha Radha Nee Enge’ from ‘Meendum Kokila’ were sung by Balu-Janaki and almost all of them are just awesome! and top of all – ‘Chippi Irukkudu’, a classic which is just perfect from Balu-Janaki-Kannadasan-MSV off screen and Kamal-Sridevi on screen won accolades from many! Not only Kamal-Sridevi, but Rajni-Sridevi movies also had absolute gems from SJ where she was paired with KJ Yesudas, SPB, Malaysia Vasudevan to give hits like ‘Hey Padal Ondru(Priya)’, ‘Aagaya Gangai(Dharma Yuddham)’, Sandhana Katre(Thanikattu Raja) ‘ etc .. The starting bit of ‘Aagaya Gangai’ where Janaki amma gave her breath taking Alaap and Sridevi providing a perfect sync for the same on screen is classic example of their coordination.

Then came solos like ‘Angatha Nattil (Neela Malargal)’, ‘Vethala Kiliye (Dheiyva Thirumanangal)’, ‘Enthan Kannil (Guru)’, ‘Naan Vanangugiren’.. but one solo that simply stood test of times and received infinite acoolades for both Sridevi and S Janaki is ‘Katril Endan Geetham’ from ‘Johny’. Raja sir’s magical composition with Janaki amma’s outstanding performance gained more beauty because of Sridevi madam’s magical performance on screen..!

Next to Tamil cinema, Maximum hits from this combination is in Telugu (may be more than Tamil also in terms of numbers). ‘Sirimalle Puvva’ is standard song for Janaki amma in all her concerts from 1978!! Another song which is very close to Janaki amma is ‘Nee Kowgililo Thala Daachi’ from ‘Kartika Deepam’. Janaki amma could not cancel a recording of this song even when her husband was admitted in hospital for a heart attack. She went to recording theatre with a very heavy heart and just poured her heart and soul into lyrics of this song! Sridevi madam did 100% justice to her singing not only in this song but all other songs that Janaki amma sang for her in the movie. This movie had a wonderful alaap by SJ whenever Sridevi appears on screen in this movie.. What an alaap it is!!

Then came songs from movies like ‘Bangaru Kanuka’, ‘Gaja Donga’ etc.. But, Best of Sridevi-S Janaki in Telugu came in form of ‘Jagadeka Veerudu- Athiloka Sundari’, where Janaki amma (along with Balu sir) sang dreamy ‘Andalalo Aho Mahodayam’, divinely romantic ‘Priyathama’ and captivating ‘Yamaho Nee Yama Yama andam’. When you see Sridevi dancing for Sj’s vocals in yamaho nee ‘Nallani katuka petti, gajjelu katti’ – It is perfect blend of a expression from voice and face!! The grace they added to this song is beyond imagination!!

‘Priya’ was a bilingual movie in Tamil and Kannada. In Tamil, Janaki amma sang only one song ‘Hey Padal Ondru’ with KJy sir, but kannada movie had all songs by Sj only .. A solo ‘Darling Darling’, two duets with KJY sir .. All were chart busters..!

Among the Malayalam songs that came from this combination, Two solos simply stand out…! Salil da’s ‘Swapnadanam (Thulavarsham)’ and AT Ummer’s ‘Neela Jalasayathil (Angeekaaram)’ had a young Sridevi delivering an emotional performance on screen with SJ’s memorable performance off screen. One duet – ‘Yamune Nee Ozhuku (Thulavarsham)’ with KJY-Sj singing Salilda’s tune is simply one of best from this duo… Janaki amma’s gamaka’s at end of charanam are must hear!!

In Hindi, ‘Gori Ke Sajan, Sajan Ki Gori’ is most popular with other hits including ‘Jab Ladki Seethi bajaye’ etc .. ‘Ghayal Ghayal’ from ‘guru’ is an interesting song where Janaki amma got to sing in a very bright manner for energetic Sridevi and in an exhausted way for wounded Sridevi..

Included bilingual versions of ‘Akalai Rajyam’, ‘Guru’ etc but did not include Dubbing songs here. However ‘Yadalo Tholi valape(Erra Gulabhilu)’, ‘Ragile Ee Naa Geetham’ (Naa Pere Johny) and Edo Raagam (Kalyana Ramudu), ‘Nee Navvula lona (Dharma Yuddam), ‘Nee pedavula lona (Ajeyudu)’, ‘Ee Erra Gulabhi (Erra Gulabhilu)’, ‘Manakosam (Vasantha Kokila) are very good melodies in Telugu Dub versions also. Similarly, ‘Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari’ and ‘Oka Radha Iddaru krishnulu’ were equally good in Tamil dubbed versions ‘Kadhal Devathai’ and ‘Hare Radha Hare Krsihna’. Interestingly, ‘Katril Endan Geetham”s Hindi dubbed version was also sung by Janaki amma – ‘Chedi Maine Sargam’.

Really thanks to Sridevi Madam and Janaki amma for all these lovely melodies..! Sharing the best of their combination here.. Shall add more songs in future, if some are missing…

Ten Songs of Janaki amma – C Narayana Reddy (A Tribute)

Sharing this article of 10 songs written by him and sung by Janaki amma as a tribute to his noble soul.

    1. Kalala alala pai telenu – Gulebakavali Katha – Ghantasala, S Janaki

CNR garu penned for movies for the first time in ‘Gulebakavali Katha’. He mentioned in many functions that ‘Kalala alala pai telenu’ sung by Janaki amma and Ghantasala mastaru was first song he wrote for the movie and ‘Nannu Dochukundavate’ by Suseelamma and Ghantasala mastaru was first song to be recorded. He even mentioned ‘Kalala alalapai’ as one of his favourites in many interviews..

This is a ‘question and answer’ kind of song with beautiful riddles by heroine to be romantically resolved by hero, which is nothing but a pure magic in young and golden string like vocals of Janaki amma along with masculine vocals of Ghantasala mastaru. Screen presence of mighty NTR added charm to the song..

      2. Pagale Vennala – Pooja Phalam

This song is a dreamy combination of S Rajeswara Rao, C Narayana Reddy, S Janaki, ANR, Jamuna, B N Reddy … One of most most popular songs of Janaki amma in Telugu cinema .. This song just cannot escape from any of ‘Best hits’ compilations of any of the artists mentioned above.. a detailed article on this all time classic is Here..

        3. Gunna Mamidi Komma meeda – Balamitrula Katha

‘Balamitrula Katha’, supposed to be a low budget movie created a permanent place in telugu cinema just with this song. Hard to imagine this movie minus the song. It is a story of two friends, one rich and other poor and the dramatic circumstances they go through.. Satyam sir made Janaki amma sing almost all songs in this movie. Gunnamamidi in particular had become signature song of Janaki amma in Telugu cinema and any concert of her hardly ends without this song. Janaki amma is very fond of the sad version of this song but sharing the happy version to show how beautifully CNR garu compared the situation of the friends to two different birds in same nest and explained that friendship is beyond any materialism of the world!

          4. Adadi Korukune varalu – Radhamma Pelli

CNR garu was expert in bringing out complete mood of a movie with in one song. Gunnamamidi song, mentioned above is a classic example for that. Dasari garu exploited this ability of CNR garu in his very first movie ‘Thatha manavudu’ with two gems ‘Eenade babu nee puttina roju’ (by PS) and Anubandham Athmeeyatha (by V Rama Krishna). He again created the magic in Radhamma pelli where SJ rendered soothing’ Aadadi korukune varalu’. This song is all about dreams of a young girl about her marriage and having kids. When all her dreams are devastated, she sings the sad version.. Initial alaap of Janaki amma, melody of Ramesh Naidu, lyrics of CNR … classic !

            5. Niddura Pora saamy – Kodalu Diddina Kapuram – SPB, S Janaki

It was NTR who brought CNR to movies (CNR is extremely famous beyond movies and he won Gnanpeet award for his works) and CNR was part of all movies that NTR produced. Janaki amma got to sing in many of those movies. Especially in Sri Krishna satya, Gems !! Song we are discussing now is from ‘Kodalu Diddina kapuram’, which is supposed to be first duet by SPB for NTR. Picked this song even leaving other hits just to show the greatness of CNR .. His usage of words like ‘Jithulamari chukkalu ninnu ethukapotahyemo’ proves his pen can write anything without compromising on quality!! Janaki amma ‘s ‘chandurruni’ added more beauty to her rendition..

              6. Neekela Intha Nirasa – Aaradhana

Aradhana, a musical it is..! Remake of Hindi movie ‘Geet’ where Janaki amma and Rafi sahab sang tunes of S hanumanta Rao, who used almost all tunes as is except for ‘Nede telsindi’ (Marumoola pallelona madhuraganamudayinchenani – a sentence true for most of golden vocals in India). ‘Naa madi ninnu pilichindi ganamai’ is biggest hit in this movie. However, sharing ‘Neekela intha nirasa’ a soothing solo by Janaki amma. Generally, while writing for a dubbing/remade song lyricist will be using similar ideology in the original song. But, CNR garu is a clear exception for that. Every song of his carried his own signature.. ‘Cheekati kontha veluthuru kontha inthe jeevithamantha’, ‘vaadina modu pooyaka manadu vachunu vasantha masam’, ‘neetho kalisi needa ga nilache thoduga nenuntanu’ – all these are purely and purely CNR!!! Janaki amma sang this with all of her heart and soul!!

                7. Siva Siva ananelara – Bhaktha Kannappa

CNR is undoubtedly one of most versatile lyricists Telugu Cinema had ever seen. Same person who could write inspiring songs like ‘Telugu jathi manadi’, ‘Chedu anavaddu’, ‘nee dharmam nee sangham’ wrote sensuous songs like ‘Naa paruvam nee kosam’. In fact, very first song of dancer Jayamalini was written by CNR and sung by SJ – ‘ Monnanae vayasochindi’ from ‘Aadadani adrushtam’. This particular song ‘Siva Siva ananelara’ for Bapu’s ‘Bhaktha Kannappa’ earned a classic status because of wonderful lyrics he gave… This Javali sung by Janaki amma picturised on young and beautiful Jayamalini who acted perfectly well for lines like ‘Bhakthulaku brathuku gadupaga gadupaga mukthi, manaboti rakthulaku gadiya gadiyaku mukthi’ ..!

                  8. Manasu Palike Mounageetham – Swati Muthyam – SPB, S Janaki

This is yet another classic to establish how versatile an artist he is ..! Each and every song of K Viswanath’s Swathimuthyam occupies a permenant place in music libraries of Telugu audience. Ilayaraja sir’s magical music with golden melodies like Suseelamma’s ‘Vatapatrasai ki varahala laali’ and Janaki amma’s duets with Balu sir – ‘Manasu palike mouna geetham’, ‘Suvvi Suvvi Suvvalamma’,
‘Chinnariponnari kittaya’ and Balu sir’s Harikatha ‘Rama kanavemira’.

Which song to pick from the three duets! Every song is a lyrical beauty with expressive singing .. Selecting ‘Manasu palike mouna geetham’ as it is such a challenging song for any lyricist or singer or composer.. It is challenging in terms of handling the situation of a wife teaching her husband how to make love to her .. CNR gave a divine look to it by comparing the holy union of a wife-husband to that of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi .. When she sings ‘Sirasu pai nee ganga nai marula jalakaladani, sagamu menu girija nai pagalu reyi odagani’, we can’t help but surrender to this genius called CNR!!

                    9. Ponna Poola Uyyala – Chandana

Ramesh Naidu was Melody and Melody was Ramesh Naidu ..! Every thing he touched was melodious ..! Janaki amma got to sing beautiful melodies in combination of Ramesh naidu – C Narayana Reddy like ‘Saddu managaneeyavoy’ from Amma mata and ‘Udayamouthunna’, a duet with SPB for ‘Mangala thoranalu’ . The best album that came from this trio is ‘Chandana’ without a second thought! It had haunting melodies like ‘Ee Reyi sathakoti depalu velagali’, ‘Neeru pallamerugu’ and ‘Sirimalle chettukunda Ramulammo’ (a personal fav of Janaki amma).

However, pick of the album is ‘Ponna poola Uyyala’. It is a folk melody of a young village girl comparing herself to beauties of nature and establishing that she is far better than anything else! Yet, the way Janaki amma sang the song makes us fall in love with her innocence, than sounding arrogant … CNR is very famous for his usage of ‘Samasalu’ and technically difficult Telugu but he used very simple and easy words in this song.. It seems as if he tried not being himself but could not help delivering the best!

                      10. Ghallu Ghalluna – Neerajanam

OP Nayyar’s only Telugu project – ‘Neerajanam’ is nothing less than a feast to ears in vocals of Balu – Janaki singing the lyrics of CNR… As a matter of fact, CNR garu was must in most of Telugu songs composed by North Indian music directors because of his fluency in Urdu and Hindi along with Telugu. This album came in late 80’s , by when usage of regular words instead of poetic/bookish language became popular in Telugu cinema .. But, look at the lines he used in this song .. ‘Kshanamaagaka thanuvoogenu ee sandhya sameeralalao’ ‘kalakanidi nijamainadi mana hrudayala neerajanam’ …That is why people like him – Once a legend, a legend forever. Neerajanam movie did not make big in theatres. But, success of music was beyond limits with a record sale of cassettes.

Just selecting 10 songs was such a tough task that many other melodies like Mallelu kurisina challani velalo ( Adugujaldalu – With Ghantasala), Emo Emo Idi (Aggi Pidugu – With Ghantasala), Okasari Kalaloki Ravayya (Gopaludu Bhoopaludu – With Ghantasala), Aa kanulalo kalala naa cheli( Alapana – With SPB), Kalaganti Kalagantine (Sri Kirhsna Satya), Priya Priya Madhuram(Sri Kirhsna Satya – With Ghantasala and B Vasantha), Sarileru neekevvaru (Kanchu Kota – With P Suseela), Salamalekum Saehb garu ( Gulebakavali katha – With Ghantasala), Kalise prathi sandhya lo (Alapana – With SPB), Aunanavu kadanavu (Vijayasimha – With PBS), Chinavada Manasayera (Jarigina Katha), Raara Rasikaranmouli (DVS Karna), Ninu chudaka nenundalenu (Neerajanam – With SPB), Orabbi chebuthanu (Kahi Babyi – with SPB) etc.. were not mentioned in the list.

Janaki amma won Nandi award for song ‘Nadila pravahinchede jevitham’ written by CNR and composed by Balamurali garu in 1997 which might be the last song sung by Janaki amma for lyrics of CNR. Thus ended professional relationship of Janaki amma with CNR garu that lasted for more than 3 decades but not their mutual admiration. He was very fond of Janaki amma’s singing that he would end up saying ‘Ammayi Nee Gonthu Sannayi’ in almost every single meeting and Janaki amma would reciprocate the same by telling all good words about his Vidwat and the way he would even give tunes for his songs to music directors ..!

With his death, Telugu poetry and cinema lost their dear child…

His poetry is pride of Telugu and his lyrics is part of day to day life of Telugu!!

Salute the genius ..!! May his noble soul rest in peace..!!

S Janaki sings for Music of SPB

It is a known fact that Balu sir and Janaki amma sang many many songs together and gave us many beautiful duet hits. But, This article is about the songs that Janaki amma sang in music of Balu sir. Balu sir started composing music with “Kanya Kumari” directed by legendary director of Telugu cinema Dasari Narayana Rao. Janaki amma got to sing beautiful solos and evergreen duets in his music direction right from his first movie.

He won Nandi award as best music director for “Mayuri”, a musical in direction of yet another Legend Sangeetham srinivas Rao and Janaki amma sang 5 out of 6 songs in this movie which remain forever as classics! When this movie was remade in Hindi, popular duo of Hindi cinema, Lakshmikanth – Pyarelal composed music for the same. They used tune for title song “Pag paadam” (which was sung by Sailaja mam in Telugu) as is and Janaki amma won “Sur Singar” award for her magical rendition in Hindi.

Janaki amma sang memorable melodies in other movies like “Padamati Sandhya Ragam”, “O Bharya Katha”, “O Amma Katha”, “Sangeeta” etc … But, Whenever she talks about Balu sir’s compositions, she picks up “Ala Mandi padake Jabili” from Jockey, a beautiful song penned by Veturi Sundara Rammurty as her favourite most..!

He composed for Tamil and Kannada also, though his major contributions as a music director were in Telugu. Especially songs from Sridhar sir’s “Thudikkum Karangal” are very melodious.

Though Balu sir did not make a very big name as music director (compared to his legendary status as singer), he gave some evergreen hits mainly in Telugu and Janaki amma sang all the songs he offered her with her unique stamp on them!
